NTUC Freelancers & Self-employed Unit (U FSE) Director Jean See, 42, has been appointed by the parliamentary Special Select Committee as the next Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) to represent the interest of workers, announced the Parliament of Singapore on 17 July 2023.
She will succeed NTUC Vice-President Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab, who will relinquish his NMP seat on 20 July 2023.
Mr Samad welcomed Ms See’s appointment and hopes she will continue looking out for workers’ best interests.
He added that he hopes she would continue "reaching out to union leaders for their views on current issues and be their voice in Parliament."
NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng posted on Facebook to welcome Ms See's appointment.
"I’m confident she will be another strong voice in the Parliament for our workers," he wrote.
Ms See will be the 14th NMP since 1992 to represent the unions in Singapore. She will commence her term, along with eight other NMPs, on 24 July 2023.
Leader of the House Indranee Rajah shared that parliament is pleased to welcome the new cohort of NMPs. She shared that the new appointees have significantly contributed to society and excelled in their respective domains.
“We look forward to their participation which will add to the spectrum of views and experiences shared in the House,” said Ms Rajah, also a member of the Special Select Committee.
Ms See joined NTUC Industrial Relations Department as a management executive in October 2003.
She previously held positions in the former Metal Industries Workers’ Union (now known as Advanced Manufacturing Employees’ Union [AMEU]), Education Services Union (ESU), as well as Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU).
She is currently the executive secretary to the National Instructors and Coaches Association; Visual, Audio, Creative Content Professionals Association (VICPA); National Delivery Champions Association (NDCA); the National Instructors and Coaches Association (NICA).
These associations supported the different groups of self-employed persons during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was recognised for her efforts with the Public Service Medal (COVID-19) in 2022.
